Henk received the Ph.D. degree from the Geophysics Department, Utrecht University, The Netherlands, in 1996. After a post-doc in Princeton University, USA, he changed careers to work at the R&D Department of Océ, currently Canon, where he worked on document image analysis. He switched between academia and industry a couple of times after which he moved to the Amsterdam UMC, Department Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, and Department of Biomedical Engineering and Physics. He is currently an Professor focusing on AI. Besides AI lead for TrianecT, he is also a co-founder of the AMC spinoff Nicolab in which AI techniques are used to support diagnosis of stroke patients.
